Textiles made with natural dyes
At SONMO we dye our textile pieces by hand with pigments extracted from the flora of the Son Moragues farm, located in the Serra de Tramuntana of Mallorca. Every season the land around us offers a unique color palette, in which the plants, water and earth are its protagonists.
Color variations and fastness
We dye our pieces in small batches. The colors created with these techniques have a beauty that synthetic dyes can hardly compete with. They are rich and complex and speak to their origins in the natural world.
Furthermore, colors can change from one dye bath to another and from one season to another, which can result in irregularities and color variations within the same piece or between one piece and the next. These particularities are part of their beauty and give them a special uniqueness.
It is important to keep in mind that our dyes are products of plant origin and as such, they change over time. All natural colors fade and soften over the years. For example, yellow tones are especially sensitive to sun exposure, pink and peach tones can become earthier, and green tones can loose their intensity.
To extend their chromatic life and preserve the colors of our pieces, it is advisable to follow the following recommendations:
- Avoid sun exposure for long periods of time.
- Wash with neutral pH detergents.
- Do not soak for long periods of time.
- Stains caused by contact with high pH substances such as lemon or vinegar could modify the color. If this happens, we recommend rinsing the textile immediately with cold water.
- Hand or machine wash at max 40º C choosing a delicate wash cycle.
Embrace the stain
All of the SONMO textile products have been designed to be a part of everyday life, to create beauty and allow you to carry out ordinary tasks as well as extraordinary projects. We must accept that due to their use, they inevitably wear out, break and stain but we believe that stains are the mark we leave on the fabric as a result of our relationship with it and for this reason we encourage you to accept and honor them.
