SONMO & SON MORAGUES
For the past 15 years we have been working to regenerate the Son Moragues estate and to return to this farm the vitality of times past, promoting those crops that for centuries gave Son Moragues its name as a local agricultural power. After all these years, we are now back to offering products such as premium olive oil, table olives or a delicious variety of tomatoes that is unique to Valldemossa.
Also, at Son Moragues, and under the newly established brand SONMO, we have created a new range of table and home ware related products, designed and made on the premises. We source the raw materials in our inmedite sorrooundings and the products are crafted by a team of full time dedicated creatives, bringing once again a renewed life to this once thriving community.
Tradition, creativity and our inmediate sorroundings are the sources of our inspiration.
THEN & NOW
Where decades ago plants and wood were cut to make firewood and coal, we now extract wood to make biomass and cut wild plants to distill their leafs.
With the raw materials with which floor and roof tiles were previously produced, today we make plates, bottles or salad bowls for everyday use.
With the ashes that were used to clean white linen in the past, we now produce glazes that are applied to our range of ceramic products.
And with the stones that for centuries were burnt in huge kilns to make lime which was used as the old-time-cement, today we make useful and timeless home and table ware objects.
The logic is the same now as it was then: to make use of the raw materials that the natural surroundings have to offer, transforming them to create a range of unique products adapted to current times.
SON MORAGUES: An estate with a long history
SONMO is the abbreviation of Son Moragues, which means "property of the Moragues family."
This ancient and grand estate located in the mountains of Mallorca has more than 500 years of history and a long list of illustrious figures, from the visionary Mateu Moragues to the esteemed Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria.
With more than 300 hectares of oak and pine forests, dry stone terraces, orchards and centuries-old olive groves, Son Moragues has been an agricultural powerhouse for centuries.
The roots of the estate go back many centuries, but it was not until the Middle Ages and after the reconquest that the farm we know today was consolidated.
In the 15th and 16th centuries, thousands of wild olive trees were grafted and a large number of dry stone terraces, cisterns, orchards and irrigation systems were built. Agriculture boomed and rural life prospered. It was a time when every square centimeter of land was cared for and a virtuous circle was forged between people who made a living in the countryside and nature. This is the vision that inspires us today at SONMO. We are the guardians of this land, and our mission is to preserve and improve it for ourselves and the future.
