Tramuntana XXI is a non-profit organization dedicated to working for the triple sustainability of the Serra de Tramuntana: environmental, economic, and social. Founded in 2017, this organization has succeeded in bringing together a diverse group of farmers, academics, environmental technicians, economists, ecologists, and many more, all committed to preserving this unique environment.

At the core of Tramuntana XXI is the heterogeneity of viewpoints and the spirit of building consensus and bridging gaps to preserve and regenerate the Serra de Tramuntana. Despite being protected, this area faces severe threats due to overexploitation and neglect.

Diagnosis and Strategy

Thanks to the hard work of the initial project promoters, including several members of the Son Moragues team, and the unwavering support of a growing group of partners and collaborators, Tramuntana XXI managed to create a detailed diagnosis of the Serra’s situation. This diagnosis, published in 2018, established that the Serra de Tramuntana is threatened by three main factors: the abandonment of traditional uses, the proliferation of inappropriate new uses, and the lack of clear and well-defined governance.

A High-Value Environment

The Serra de Tramuntana is the area with the highest biodiversity in the Balearic Islands and has multiple protection statuses, including UNESCO World Heritage recognition as a Cultural Landscape. This landscape, sculpted and domesticated over centuries, has become a rich agricultural environment known for its thousands of kilometers of dry-stone terraces and spectacular olive groves, vineyards, and orchards. However, with the decline of agriculture in the 20th century and competition from more accessible intensive plantations, there has been a progressive abandonment of the crops and forests that created this exceptional environment.

Reversing the Trend of Degradation

Tramuntana XXI works tirelessly to reverse these trends, seeking innovative ways to preserve traditional uses and environments. The association operates on multiple fronts: rural development, governance, and public awareness, collaborating with both the private and public sectors. It organizes courses, conferences, and talks, generates studies and educational materials, and directly manages over 1,000 hectares where it implements its vision of a regenerated Tramuntana.

One of the most successful recent projects is the advisory service for rural estates that it offers, designed to support farmers and estate owners, providing their knowledge and a wide network of experts to help manage this environment and reverse its degradation.

The Role of Son Moragues

Son Moragues has played a crucial role in the development of Tramuntana XXI from its inception, contributing financial and human resources, as well as physical space to implement sustainable management practices. The mountains of Son Moragues, with the Montaña del Voltor project, have served as a pioneering example of Land Stewardship. The perfection of the traditional Mallorcan ecological olive grove cultivation has demonstrated that it is still possible to commercially cultivate a mountain olive grove, and the latest innovations in regenerative agriculture pave the way for other estates to join this mission.
