Launch of the SONMO Wool Collection.
At SONMO, we are proud to present our first blankets, made on the Son Moragues estate using a restored loom and Mallorcan wool. This project connects the past with the present.
This launch is much more than a new product line; it’s an effort to revive a textile tradition on the island that had been abandoned for over 50 years.
Each SONMO blanket from this first production reflects our commitment to sustainability and the circular economy, helping to regenerate the use of local wool from the Serra de Tramuntana.
The unexpected gift that started it all
It all began in 2022, when we were offered several old looms and other machinery from a textile factory near Palma, which had been closed and abandoned since the late 1960s. With the help of experts like Daniel Harris from the London Cloth Co., we devised a plan to restore the looms and launch a textile project centered around the wool from local herds.
The transformation: restoration and first productions
In January 2023, the looms were moved to a workshop in Palma, where they were carefully dismantled and restored over more than a year. At the same time, as happens every year, the flocks of several estates in the mountains of Mallorca, including Son Moragues, Vistamar, and Sa Torre, were shorn. The wool obtained from these shearings was later blended with wool from Spanish merino sheep, creating the yarn that would be used for the first batch of SONMO blankets.
A local production with a forward-looking vision
From the outset, SONMO chose to work exclusively with wool from nearby regions, either from Mallorca or Spain, consciously excluding the widespread European and global practice of importing wool from Australia or New Zealand. With the support of Ramón and Jesús Cobo from Wool Dreamers in Mota del Cuervo (Cuenca), we achieved the perfect balance in a yarn that is soft yet durable, ideal for the type of product we envisioned.
Designs that breathe history and tradition
For the design of the new SONMO blanket line, we drew inspiration from the historical uses of Mallorcan wool, which was traditionally used to make resilient blankets for clients such as hospitals or the Spanish army, while adapting the textures to more contemporary tastes. The nearly two-year development effort has resulted in a collection of blankets with classic designs in natural tones:
- Vertical stripes in plain weave
- Solid white in herringbone weave
- Solid white in plain weave
- Diagonal stripes in classic twill weave
The first Mallorcan blankets in decades
These blankets, made to last and to be enjoyed for years, are perfect for the home or for outdoor use. From a picnic blanket to a cozy throw or sofa blanket, each one represents a milestone in the textile regeneration of the island.
