SONMO CERAMIC WORKSHOP

The SONMO ceramic studio at Son Moragues celebrates a rich ceramic heritage that spans from the Arab period to the present. The Arabs introduced tin-glazed techniques, a legacy that still influences our glaze recipes. Over the centuries, the estate has refined production methods, such as making tiles for floors and roofs, evidenced by the remains of an ancient oven that persists to this day.

Archduke Luis Salvador, a key figure in the estate's history, fostered a deep appreciation for artisanal ceramics and the natural environment of the Tramuntana. Inspired by his legacy, at SONMO we blend traditional artisan techniques and local materials with modern methods, providing an immersive experience that spans the entire ceramic process: from the initial design to the finished product. Our clients will see everything from the creation of models and production molds, clay preparation, molding and cleaning of each piece, to decoration and glazing. They will have the opportunity to handle and work with the pieces at various stages of the process, including painting with ashes, a by-product of the estate, thus gaining a tactile understanding of our materials and techniques. A tour of the studio and viewing of some short videos will ensure that clients understand the entire lifecycle of a ceramic piece.

This enriching tour is suitable for beginners as well as experienced potters, and culminates with the opportunity to take home a unique piece of SONMO ceramics. This process not only honors the rich ceramic tradition of Mallorca but also educates and connects visitors to the culture and environmental sustainability of the region.
