In 2013, Son Moragues launched a project aimed at regenerating one of the most emblematic and cherished natural environments in the municipality of Valldemossa: the Muntanya del Voltor. This area of exceptional beauty, comprising over 150 hectares of pine forests, holm oak groves, and ethnological elements, was in a state of neglect, uncontrolled overcrowding, and degradation. Its recovery began thanks to the collaboration of various entities and the implementation of a management plan.
An Agreement for Regeneration
The cornerstone of this project was the signing of a land stewardship agreement between the four estates that own the Muntanya del Voltor: Son Moragues, Can Costa, Son Gual and Son Gual Petit. This agreement established the basis for coordinated and sustainable management of the area. Additionally, agreements were signed with key institutions, both public and private, ensuring broad support and resources to carry out the necessary actions.
Dedicated Team and Management Plan
A specialized team composed of environmental guides and forestry workers was formed to execute the management plan. This team has worked tirelessly to restore ancient paths, viewpoints, water systems, and other features, returning them to their original splendor and preserving them for future generations.
Reforestation and Forest Management
In addition to the restoration of historical structures, the project has undertaken undergrowth replanting and forest cleaning of the holm oak groves. Biomass extraction has been crucial to mitigate the risk of fires, ensuring the safety and sustainability of the environment. Furthermore, rigorous pest control has been implemented, addressing threats like the Cerambyx cerdo beetle and the feral goat (Capra aegagrus hircus), which endanger the regeneration of the forest mass.
Promotion and Responsible Public Use
Another fundamental aspect of the project has been the management of public use. Paths have been signposted, and digital and paper content, such as maps and field guides, have been created, along with the establishment of an information booth and a reservation system. This effort has been key to educating and engaging the main stakeholders, from neighbors, regular hikers, and mountain guides to occasional visitors and tourists, thus harmonizing recreational use with environmental conservation.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Tradition
The goal of these actions has been to harmonize public use with the regeneration of a fragile and degraded natural environment. In the past, the Muntanya del Voltor was a center of artisanal activity and traditional crafts. During that time, firewood was extracted, charcoal was made, ice was created from snow in the cases de neu, lime was produced in the forn de calç kilns, and charcoal was made in the sitges. Fundamental activities such as hunting, and livestock farming were also carried out.
A Model of Public-Private Collaboration
After just over a decade, the team employed on the mountain has been reduced as the environment has regenerated and public use has been regulated. Today, the Muntanya del Voltor stands as a notable example of public-private collaboration and community regeneration of a natural environment through the figure of Land Stewardship.
